VALUABLE PUBLICATION FOR SETTLERS 1841 |
---|
A letter has been received in town from the Rev. Francis Close, of Cheltenham, England, a clergyman of great literary eminence, one of the most popular preachers in England, and at the head of what is termed, for want of a better name, the Evangelical Party in the Church.
It is mentioned in this letter, that the Rev. John Couch Grylls, incumbent of St. James' Church of England, Melbourne, had communicated with him upon the subject of a book which he was anxious to publish in England for circulation in the Colony.
Previous to the departure of Mr. Grylls for England, it will be recollected that a great number of names were entered for copies of his intended publication, the principal object of which was to offer a compilation of prayers, scriptural readings, and homilies, for each Sunday in the year, for the use of residents in the bush deprived of the means of attending divine worship.
The reverend author, it appears, is desirous of receiving sermons from most of the great divines of England, to insert in his admirably projected work; and, in answer to his application, the Rev. Francis Close has contributed four.
We trust, at an early period, to welcome both the author and his production on his return to Melbourne.
